Bagno a Ripoli è per molti un semplice centro abitato
nelle immediate vicinanze di Firenze, sviluppatosi nel corso dei secoli su quel
tratto di terreni pianeggianti all’estremità sud-orientale della conca
fiorentina attraversati dall’Arno, il cosiddetto Pian di Ripoli. Il suo
territorio, tuttavia, non si esaurisce con la pianura in cui sorge, è anzi in
gran parte composto da modeste colline che talvolta aspirano invano a farsi monte:
il Poggio dell’Incontro si ferma a 560 metri, Poggio Firenze sfiora i 680.
Incastonato tra la città di Firenze, il Valdarno Superiore e il Chianti, il
territorio di Bagno a Ripoli è l’esito fortunato dell’incontro tra un ambiente
già favorito dalla natura e la mano sapiente degli uomini che lo hanno abitato
fin dall’antichità: con dedizione secolare hanno coltivato terreni, terrazzato
colline, costruito sobrie pievi e ville sfarzose, forgiando quegli struggenti
panorami che ancora oggi lo caratterizzano.

Bagno a Ripoli may seem no more than an outlying
suburb of Florence that has grown up over the centuries on the flat land at the
southwestern end of the Florentine valley traversed by the Arno, called Pian di
Ripoli. Its territory, however, includes not only the plain but many low hills,
at times vainly aspiring to the status of mountains, as with Poggio
dell’Incontro, which rises to 560 metres, and Poggio Firenze, to 680. The arc
formed by these hills serves as natural barrier dividing the territory of
Ripoli from the Valdarno and the Florentine Chianti. Nestled between the City
of Florence, the Upper Valdarno and Chianti, the territory of Bagno a Ripoli is
the felicitous outcome of a meeting between an environment favoured by nature
and the skilful hands of the people who have lived here since ancient times. With centuries-long devotion they have
cultivated the fields, terraced the hills, built sober parish churches and
splendid villas to forge those breath-taking panoramas still unique to them
today.
