Francesco Luti will be presenting his novel Millepiedi on 14 November at 9pm in Melbooks in Florence. Francesco Luti (born in Florence in 1970) is a writer and literary translator who from a young age undertook a variety of jobs including those of errand boy, type setter, articled clerk, hotel porter etc) whilst at the same time contributing to periodicals and reviews first as a freelance journalist and then as an editor. During this period of work he obtained first a degree in law and then a degree in foreign languages and literature. As a writer his first book was Profili (Verona, Gutemberg, 1989), published when he was only 19. There then followed a literary silence of several years broken only by the occasional short texts published in Italian and foreign reviews. During this period Luti devoted himself to literary translation, especially to poetry, becoming in the space of ten years the leading translator of the major contemporary poets in Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan, authors with international reputations who entrusted the translation of their works to Luti. Such well established poets as Mario Benedetti from Uruguay, Lêdo Ivo from Brazil and Ángel González, Carlos Bousoño and Pere Gimferrer from Spain rely on Luti’s Italian translation of their works. Other authors he has translated include Vinicius de Moraes, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Claudio Rodríguez and Jaime Gil de Biedma. Luti taught literature for a time in Spain and Brazil.
