The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, created in 1891 then richly expanded and renewed between 2012 and 2015, holds the world’s most important collection of Florentine sculpture of Middle Ages and Renaissance. Among the many masterpieces housed there we remember the Porta del Paradiso (Heaven’s Gate) and the Porta Nord (North Gate) of the Baptistery, built by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the Santa Maria Maddalena penitente by Donatello, the Cantoria by Luca della Robbia, the monumental Silver Cross by Antonio del Pollaiuolo and the precious embroidery which he designed for the vestments of the patron feast of Florence (St. John the Baptist).
The guide, smart and richly illustrated, is enriched by a bibliography and the maps of the different sections of the museum.
