Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908) is considered, together with Solvestro Lega and Telemaco Signorini, the most important exponent of the group of Macchiaioli painters, and also one of the significant artists of the Italian artistic scene in the 800s. He managed to give us a report of the historic realty in which he lived, focusing on battles, but he was also able to show the beauty of nature and the struggle of working in the countryside. He was also a portrayer capable of capturing the psychological profile of his subjects, which is defined both with the expressions of their faces  and their postures. He was excellent in the graphic, especially in the etching technique, that he used in his own personal way, with short marks that blend until they become figures, landscapes, lights, and shadows. About his way of seeing painting, he wrote: “I loved art, and I still love it extremely. I strongly believe that art does not need pedantries, but simple tools and all the materials that are useful to reproduce, either canvases, panels, wood… a small palette, with few colors: the luxury is for amateurs.”
