Short guide to the new Museo dell’Opera del Duomo of Florence

Il Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, creato nel 1891 e poi rinnovato e allargato tra il 2012 e il 2015, ospita la collezione di sculture fiorentine del Medioevo e del Rinascimento più antica al mondo. Tra i numerosi capolavori presenti, ricordiamo la Porta del Paradiso e la Porta Nord del Battistero, costruito da Lorenzo Ghiberti, Santa Maria Penitente di Donatello, Cantoria di Luca della Robbia, la monumentale Croce d’Argento di Antonio del Pollaiuolo e il prezioso ricamo che disegnò per la vestizione del patrono di Firenze (S. Giovanni Battista).
La guida, sintetica e riccamente illustrata, è impreziosita dalla bibliografia e le mappe delle diverse sezioni del museo.

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, created in 1891 then richly expanded and renewed between 2012 and 2015, holds the world’s most important collection of Florentine sculpture of Middle Ages and Renaissance. Among the many masterpieces housed there we remember the Porta del Paradiso (Heaven’s Gate) and the Porta Nord (North Gate) of the Baptistery, built by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente by Donatello, the Cantoria by Luca della Robbia, the monumental Silver Cross by Antonio del Pollaiuolo and the precious embroidery which he designed for the vestments of the patron feast of Florence (St. John the Baptist).
The guide, smart and richly illustrated, is enriched by a bibliography and the maps of the different sections of the museum.
