Carmine Crocco, pastore di Rionero in Vulture, fu il protagonista più attivo e famoso del grande brigantaggio che, dal 1861 al 1865, sconvolse e insanguinò l’Italia meridionale. Basato su un’ampia documentazione, il libro ricostruisce la vita di Crocco – dall’infanzia e giovinezza in Basilicata fino alla morte nel bagno penale di Portoferraio –, e racconta le vicende che fecero di lui uno dei protagonisti della storia d’Italia al momento dell’Unità. La vita di Crocco venne intrecciandosi con i grandi avvenimenti della storia italiana di quegli anni: il movimento garibaldino, il Risorgimento nel Mezzogiorno d’Italia, l’attività dei comitati borbonici nel sud, la protesta sociale dei contadini meridionali, l’esplosione del brigantaggio.

Considered by many a folk hero, the Lucan bandit Carmine Crocco was the main protagonist of the Great Brigandage of 1861-1865. Displeased by the behaviour of the Italian government, that did not offer him the reward he was expecting for fighting with Garibaldi, Crocco became the most formidable adversary of the newly born Regno d’Italia, leading an army of 1,000 brigands and collaborating with the champions of the Bourbonist reaction.
