Il volume ripercorre la storia e le vicende della dimora del grande pittore empolese Jacopo Carucci, meglio noto come ‘Pontormo’, dal nome del sobborgo in cui nacque nel 1494. Nel 1994, in occasione del quinto centenario della nascita dell’artista, l’edificio fu acquistato dal Comune di Empoli e oggi, dopo dodici anni di investimenti e di lavori, è diventato un museo.
Il libro, avvalendosi anche di foto dell’edificio e di riproduzioni a colori di alcune fra le opere più famose del Pontormo, fa luce su molti aspetti della vita quotidiana e artistica del pittore toscano, una delle personalità più inquiete e innovative della sua epoca, da molti considerato fra i primi manieristi fiorentini.
Cinque saggi compongono l’opera, il primo, La casa del Pontormo. Primo viatico, è firmato dal curatore Antonio Natali. Seguono le Vicende della casa di Claudio Batistini e Edo Rossi, Il borgo di Marco Frati, Jacopo per la chiesa di san Michele di Cristina Gelli e infine La ceramica a Pontorme nei secoli XV-XVII di Anna Moore Valeri sulla fiorente industria ceramica di Pontorme tra Quattro e Cinquecento.
This work outlines the history and happenings in the home of the great Empolese painter Jacopo Carucci, better known as ’Pontormo’, from the name of the suburb where he was born in 1494. In 1994, in honor of the fifth century anniversary of the birth of the artist, the building was purchased by the municipality of Empoli and today, after twelve years of investments and work, it has become a museum.
The book, using photographs of the building as well as color reprints of some Pontormo’s most famous works, sheds light on many aspects of the informal and professional life of the Tuscan artists, know to be one of the most unsettling and innovative personalities of his time and also considered to be among the first Florentine Mannerists.
There are five essays in the volume. The first, La casa del Pontormo. Primo viatico (The House of Pontormo. Last Rites First), is signed by the curator Antonio Natali. Next come Vicende della casa (Events in the house) by Claudio Batistini and Edo Rossi, Il borgo (The neighborhood) by Marco Frati, Jacopo per la chiesa di San Michele (Jacopo for the church of Saint Michael) by Cristina Gelli and finally La ceramica a Pontorme nei secoli XV-XVII (The ceramics of Pontorme from the 15th to the 17th centuries) by Anna Moore Valeri, about the Florentine ceramics industry in Pontorme between the 1400s and 1500s.
