Main point of reference about restoration on the masterpieces damaged by the flood in Florence in 1966.

The book reproduces, in a reduced size but with extreme accuracy, what was carried out between 2002 and 2006 by the Superintendency for the Historical, Artistic and Anthropological Patrimony for the Provinces of Florence, Pistoia and Prato on the artistic masterpieces damaged by the flood of the Arno river on 6 November 2006. Each official of the Superintendency introduces the context where he operated in these years and then wrote a description of the restored work of art. Brunella Teodori, responsible for the church dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, as well as for the Basilica of Santa Croce, the symbol of the ecclesiastic patrimony damaged by the flood, wrote five descriptions as many paintings completely recovered from the damages suffered. Mirella Branca illustrated the conditions of the church of San Niccolò Oltrarno (one of the complexes more damaged by the flood, as it was placed in the depression eastwards to Ponte alle Grazie) and analyzed historical-critic episodes of two recovered altar-pieces, along with two paintings by Luigi Mussini from the church of Santa Maria Novella. Maria Matilde Simari illustrated the church of Santa Trinita and the seriously damaged church of Santi Apostoli, as well as the problems of returning the restored works of art. Ilaria Ciseri was responsible for the church of San Francesco di Castelfiorentino, a town invested by the Arno main affluent, the Elsa, and illustrated six works of art back in the best conservative conditions.
The book is enriched with a set of coloured plates that permits to observe the results obtained with the restoration and with an appendix made up of two essays: the first, by Maria Matilde Simari, about the old and new depots of works of art; the second, by Daniela Dini, about the role and the work of Dino Dini on the flooded frescoes (1967-1976).
